Finally I found my domain name

january 20, 2024 - css

After years of searching, I finally did it—I have my own last name as a domain name. It's somewhat surprising because my last name, Cornello, is not very common in the world. However, I do have family, and they already had the .nl extension for a construction business, and .com has been taken for a while.

Recently, I came across an opportunity for a .eu extension, and I seized it. I wanted to create a website to present myself to the rest of the world. Additionally, I have opinions, and I enjoy sharing them with others. It serves as a kind of timeline for me.

A place where I can go to see what I've done. But also for others to see who I am, what I do and what interests me.

I was looking for relatively affordable hosting for my domain name because I don't anticipate a lot of traffic, and I can always upgrade later. The issue is that many independent hosting companies have been acquired by larger hosting firms, leaving only a few major players in the hosting market in the Netherlands. An example of such a major player in the Netherlands is:

Your.online owns:

  • Yourhosting
  • Versio
  • Savvii
  • Argeweb
  • Neostrada
  • Realhosting
  • Vip internet
  • PCextreme
  • Revices
  • deHeeg
  • Axarnet

and much more, for the whole list click here.

The hosting I use has only been around for a few years and is still independent, but whether it will remain that way remains to be seen.

Update on hosting

maart 7, 2024 - blog

I've been using my new hosting for a while now, including the email service from Squiremail that comes with it, and I've noticed occasional delays. Since I'm sharing a virtual server with others, it's possible that the presence of a large site might be causing the slowdown.

I've already submitted a ticket, but the response hasn't been very helpful, so I'll wait and see. At the very least, the situation shouldn't worsen. Additionally, considering my website is just for a hobby and I'm on a budget, some downtime was to be expected.
